Wrexham’s Prem dream will get severe as ex-Newcastle chief arrives — is Parkinson in danger?
When Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac first talked about taking Wrexham to the Premier League, rival fans chuckled heartily into their pint glasses. However, the announcement this week of Steve Nickson’s appointment as sporting director marks a significant statement of intent which reinforces the Hollywood duo’s top-flight ambitions.
The 61-year-old boasts 15 years on Tyneside as Newcastle’s talent guru and over a decade at Blackburn before that. We’re talking about the man who personally unearthed gems like Ayoze Perez, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. That’s proper elite pedigree.
Nickson himself knows the scale of the task ahead of him. Speaking after his arrival was officially confirmed following months of speculation, he said: “I am very excited to be joining Wrexham AFC as sporting director.

“This is a club with incredible momentum, a unique culture and a clear ambition. The journey so far has been remarkable, with three consecutive promotions and a seventh-place finish in the club’s first season back in the second tier.
“I am looking forward to working closely with Phil Parkinson, the coaching staff and the wider sporting team to continue developing the club’s recruitment, scouting and football operations.
“There is already a strong foundation in place, and my focus will be on helping Wrexham take the next step by building the structure, talent pathways and football operations needed to support the club’s ambition of reaching the Premier League.”
If Nickson is to guide the Red Dragons into the top tier, his inbox already has three non-negotiable priorities.
1. Cast the global net for hidden gems (and new blood up front)

Wrexham can’t just keep outspending their rivals forever, particularly now they’re competing against the likes of Wolves and West Ham in the transfer market.
Nickson’s main mandate is utilising his global black book to dig out raw, hidden gems from untapped foreign markets, grabbing high-potential assets cheap and developing them, or flipping them for large profits.
Top of his shopping list must be an agile, dynamic forward who brings a completely fresh dimension to the attack. Right now, Wrexham rely heavily on target men Kieffer Moore and Sam Smith.

Both are adept focal points, but Parkinson practically uses them as mirror-image swaps mid-game. Wrexham dipped their toes into hunting for alternatives, like 19-year-old Sidiki Cherif before his mega-money moves to Fenerbahce and later Coventry.
Nickson needs to use his scouting network to finally deliver a rapid, unpredictable forward who adds genuine variety to break down Championship defences.
2. Build a ruthless academy conveyer belt

You can’t build a sustainable top-tier club purely off writing big cheques for new recruits. Having previously served as head of youth recruitment at both Blackburn and St James’ Park, a key part of Nickson’s job will be to overhaul the club’s academy setup.
Wrexham need a self-sustaining talent pipeline that turns local prospects into first-team stars or lucrative transfer assets, ensuring the club can navigate financial rules without relying entirely on A-list celebrity cash.
3. Do the unthinkable? Scrutinising Phil Parkinson’s ceiling

Phil Parkinson has loads of credit in the bank after three straight promotions and almost making the Championship play-off places last season.
But doubts remain in some quarters over whether he has the credentials to take the next step and lift the club into the Premier League. While it’s too early to make sweeping judgements yet, Wrexham are currently 14th after six games.
The Red Dragons, who now have private equity investors on board, will no doubt be looking to improve on last term’s seventh place finish after yet another big summer of spending. Nickson’s brief includes holding the keys to managerial calls.
If Parkinson’s pragmatic style falls short of helping their owners to realise their Premier League dream, Nickson won’t hesitate to make the cold-hearted decision required to get the maximum out of the club’s expensively-assembled squad.
