Brits are facing a weekend washout as 60mph Atlantic gales and flash floods prepare to smash the UK on Saturday. Weather experts at the Met Office warn the country is in for “unsettled” conditions, with northern and western regions braced to take the brunt of a 50mm rain wall.
Forecasters warn that higher deluges are possible locally, threatening a nightmare scenario of surface-water and flash flooding if the skies burst in a short window.
Coastal spots are set to be hit by “large waves” as 50mph to 60mph gales batter exposed areas, with weather maps showing heavy rain drenching Scotland, Wales and northern England as the miserable week continues, reports the Express.

The Met Office forecast states: “Saturday currently looks like the most unsettled day of the weekend, particularly across northern and western areas.
“Low pressure approaching from the Atlantic is expected to bring rain and strengthening winds, but there remains uncertainty over its exact track, timing and intensity.
“This system is still developing, and relatively small changes in its path could affect where the heaviest rain and strongest winds occur. At present, northern and western parts of the UK are most likely to experience the wettest and windiest conditions.

“Some western areas could receive 30 to 50mm of rain, with higher totals possible locally. If this falls within a short period, there is a risk of surface-water or flash flooding.
It adds: “Gusts of 50 to 60mph are also possible in exposed locations, alongside some gusty conditions inland across parts of Scotland and northeast England.
“Large waves may affect some coasts, with spring tides potentially increasing coastal impacts. Further south and east, Saturday may begin largely dry with some sunshine.
“Rain is expected to reach these areas later, continuing in places overnight, although it should be lighter than across the north and west.”
Another Met Office forecast covering the entire weekend adds: “Wet, and in places windy, weather will move southeastwards across the UK on Saturday, followed by sunshine and showers. Drier for most on Sunday, though further rain arriving on Monday.”
The latest forecast and weather maps show a total of 29 areas facing heavy downpours this weekend. These forecasts of unsettled conditions in September follow scorching temperatures and heatwaves this summer.
