Half of Brits admit they routinely forget to take carrier bags for the weekly shop – despite having a stockpile at home. Fortunately, Aldi has come up with a fashionable and practical solution to the problem.

A forgetful 46% of shoppers turn up to the supermarket empty-handed despite a whopping 85% having a ‘bag of bags’ stashed at home, according to a survey by Aldi.

Research into UK shopping habits revealed 47% admit to buying another reusable bag at least once a month after forgetting theirs, which rises to 69% among Gen Z.

Those in Yorkshire and Northern Ireland top the list of those most likely to buy a new bag after forgetting theirs, with one fifth (21%) revealing they buy a new bag at least once a week.

Meanwhile Londoners are named the most likely group to specifically go back home after forgetting a bag, with 44% unwilling to add another bag to their collection.

While many people have cupboards stuffed with carrier bags, they can also be surprisingly loyal to their favourites.

Of those quizzed, 62% said they have a reusable bag they always reach for – whether it’s because it’s sturdy (52%), they love the design (26%) or simply because it’s been by their side for years (18%).

But when there’s no avoiding it, some Brits aren’t afraid to use bonkers alternatives, including buckets (6%), picnic baskets (5%), baby changing bags (4%), pet carriers (3%) and wheelbarrows (2%).

Brits’ love for bags goes beyond the grocery shop, with 25% revealing they’ve used reusable shopping bags to store dirty clothes on holiday, while others use them as laundry (21%) or work bags (16%).

To guarantee the nation never forgets its shopping bag again, Aldi claim to have created a clever solution that shoppers can wear.

Aldi has come up with a stylish solution to the problem

The supermarket’s new transformable Swag For Life Jacket changes from an everyday coat into a reusable shopping bag in seconds.

It’s a stylish, waterproof navy bomber with a statement funnel neck, pale blue and orange detailing, large pockets and Aldi branding on the front and back.

But when a bag emergency strikes, it transforms into a grocery-sized shopping bag.

Two-thirds of Gen Z (66%) said they’d find a jacket that transforms into a reusable bag useful, while 74% claimed bags for life should be more stylish.

More than half (52%) of those quizzed reveal they’re looking forward to cooler weather and 55% said they’re looking forward to wearing a jacket again.

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Forgetting your bag for life is something we’ve all done, so our Swag For Life Jacket makes sure you’ll never be without one at the checkout again.
