Alejandro Garnacho denied two clauses as Man Utd’s possibilities of £43m Chelsea payday diminish

Alejandro Garnacho is currently on loan at Aston Villa until the end of the season, while Chelsea and the Midlands club may wished they’d done more negotiating over his move

Manchester United and Chelsea look set to be denied a summer payday from Alejandro Garnacho’s loan to Aston Villa, and have no easy avenue to find a solution in January. The winger joined Villa in the summer, with the Midlands club holding an obligation to sign the player providing certain conditions were met.

These were considered to be straightforward but Garnacho’s move has not got off to a good start. The 22-year-old has yet to start a game and featured for just 30 minutes across the opening three Premier League matches of the season.

Otherwise, Garnacho has simply remained on the bench, suggesting that Villa are in no rush to foot up £43m to Chelsea. Garnacho joined the Blues for £40m last year and struggled to establish himself as he recorded eight goals in 43 appearances in his debut campaign.

Following the arrival of Xavi Alonso, Chelsea were happy to move on from Garnacho and would have set their eyes on a modest profit at the end of this season. That would also see Manchester United cash in due to a 10 per cent sell-on clause that was included in the deal to take Garnacho to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea may need to find a new deal in the summer or see him stuck in west London, however. And what could unfold this term could be a frustrating experience for Villa and Chelsea, with neither side having an easy solution.

The Blues do not have a January recall clause included in the deal, according to The Telegraph, meaning it will be difficult to find a more likely permanent solution until the summer. Villa also did not include an early exit clause to escape their own obligations.

Instead, the sides would both have to agree to cut Garnacho’s loan deal short in the January transfer window if they want to find another solution.

Villa boss Unai Emery has simply said that Garnacho must work hard to move up the pecking order in the Midlands. “Continue working. Work, work, train, work,” he said.

“When he can have minutes to play, try to play well. He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now.

“George [Hemmings] is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want. (Ibrahim) Mbaye also responded well.

“We want a competitive team and players to compete in the style we have. Garnacho is a little bit behind because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs.”
