People urged by police to shelter in supermarkets after ‘gun threats’ made

Police confirmed that a 38-year-old man has been arrested after being called to reports that threats involving a firearm had been made in Wales

People were asked to shelter in supermarkets after a man was reported to have made threats involving a firearm. Police were called to the scene in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales this afternoon (September 25).

Officers carried out “extensive inquiries” to try and find the suspect. As they searched for him, members of the public were “temporarily asked to remain inside nearby supermarkets” to “ensure their safety”, Dyfed-Powys Police said. No specific supermarkets were named by the force.

A spokesman for the force has since said that the incident, which began at around 3.45pm, was “brought to a safe conclusion” with nobody injured. The force confirmed that a 38-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody.

He has been arrested on suspicion of sending communication threatening death or serious harm, the spokesman said, as WalesOnline reports.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said on Friday evening: “Officers have been dealing with an incident in which a man was reported to have made threats involving a firearm at about 3.45pm this afternoon.

“Officers attended the Trostre area of Llanelli and carried out extensive inquiries and searches to locate the man. As a precaution, and while officers worked to locate him, members of the public were temporarily asked to remain inside nearby supermarkets to ensure their safety.

“The man has since been located and the incident has been brought to a safe conclusion. A 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of sending communication threatening death or serious harm and is in police custody.

“We would like to thank members of the public and local businesses for their patience and cooperation while officers dealt with the incident.”
