Alex Scott has withdrawn from the England squad after making his full international debut on Saturday against Croatia. The Bournemouth star, 23, picked up the knock before he was part of the 7-0 thrashing.

Scott, who played for 70 minutes in Rijeka, was one of the Three Lions’ standout stars as they put Croatia to the sword. However, after the full-time whistle, he has withdrawn from the squad with talkSPORT reporting he could face up to two months on the sidelines.

The report adds that two months is the worst case scenario and it’s hoped he may only be unavailable for a couple of weeks. Tuchel was full of praise for Scott on Saturday evening, hinting he could challenge Declan Rice for his starting spot.

The German said: “We need performances like this. This is just the nature of it. We will not survive on two central midfielders. The more the better – and it’s always about the guys who are in camp.

“Declan knows about his importance, and he’s one of the very best midfielders in Europe. Nothing will change that. But it’s exactly what we need. We need more variety.

“We need more options. Then it’s always about the guys who are in camp. Alex was in the highest level.”

And when asked about a partnership of Scott and Manchester City star Elliot Anderson, he added: “I guess it helps. Not only as players but even in their character. They’re a good mix and match.

“Alex had a fantastic match, and we need to be strong in the middle of the pitch. I’m very happy with the level that Alex trained at.”

Scott was first called up to the England squad last November, for clashes with Serbia and Albania, but he did not make an appearance. He was also part of the five players that joined England’s preparation camp ahead of the World Cup.
