“The decision follows a series of poor results which have seen the club anchored to the foot of the Enterprise National League table. Assistant Manager, Martin Smith, will also leave the club with immediate effect.

“First Team Coach, Ben Clark, will assume the role of Caretaker Manager until further notice.”

Interim Chairman, Graham Wood said: “The club wishes to thank Lee and Martin for their efforts and wishes them both success in their future careers.”

Cattermole spent 10 years at the Stadium of light, between 2009 and 2019, and made 233 appearances for the Black Cats. After leaving Sunderland, he spent one season int he Netherlands with VVV-Venlo before calling time on his career.

He has since tried his hand at coaching, starting with Middlesborough U18s before joining Bristol Rovers as first-team coach with a focus on the development and implementation of set-pieces.

However, four days after joining, he was named caretaker manager after Matt Taylor was sacked. Gateshead was the first time Cattermole had held that title outright.
