Military base ‘explosion’ leaves seven lifeless and ‘overwhelming’ quantity injured
Fatalities and injuries have been reported following a serious incident after an ‘explosion’ triggering a major fire at a military base on Saturday afternoon
Deaths and injuries have been reported following a “serious incident” at a military base. Reports have emerged of a potential explosion at the CFB Wainwright military base in Alberta, Canada. At least seven people have been killed, sources told Global News.
Defence Minister David McGuinty: “The explosion sparked a significant fire on Saturday, 17 October around 4pm local time. I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base.”
The Canadian Armed Forces, along with federal, provincial and local authorities, were managing the emergency response, he added. The neighbouring town of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting assistance.
A doctor at a hospital in Edmonton, a city 120 miles northwest from the blast, said patients were being brought to hospitals across the city from the base.
He added medical facilities and hospitals around the base have been completely overwhelmed due to the number of people injured.
Dr Warren Thirsk, an emergency department doctor at Royal Alexandra Hospital, stated: “It is more patients than any of us want to count right now. It’s a disaster.
“It’s a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster.”
Multiple reports have surfaced that an “explosion” triggered a large fire, spreading quickly due to strong winds in the region, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The Municipal District of Wainwright verified the fire had crossed the military base’s boundary fence and was progressing rapidly in high winds. Firefighters from several areas were dispatched in response, and no evacuation order had been issued.
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has declared his province is sending aid to Alberta, although he did not detail the specific resources being deployed.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith characterised the fire as “significant and tragic.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted on X: “A serious incident creating a major fire has occurred at CFB Wainwright, in Alberta. Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.
“We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities. Premier Smith and I are in close contact as are our relevant ministers and officials.”
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, located roughly 180 kilometres (112 miles) south-east of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s busiest military training bases, where soldiers are trained for combat operations.
It is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts realistic battlefield exercises, as well as the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides military training.
Canadian Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre disclosed that he had been in touch with Carney and the defence minister to offer support to those impacted by the fire. “Pray for Wainwright, everyone,” Poilievre urged in a social media post.
He urged residents in the impacted area to follow emergency advice and keep roads clear for emergency services.
