Manchester United have seemingly made their mind up on Lisandro Martinez’s future with the centre-back reportedly on his way out of the club at the end of the season. The Argentine publicly slammed United’s hierarchy, including director of football Jason Wilcox, following their Champions League defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.

Martinez subsequently issued an apology and was named in the starting line-up for Sunday’s draw against Leeds United, yet it seems his days at the club could be numbered.

Although Martinez was substituted at half-time during the Leeds clash after picking up a knock, which has left his availability for the midweek Champions League clash against Como in serious doubt, he remains a key part of Michael Carrick’s side.

However, the Daily Mail reports that United have placed the defender on the transfer list as they look to reshape their back line ahead of next season.

Although his contract is due to run out in the summer, it is widely expected that a one-year extension will be activated, allowing the Red Devils to command a transfer fee for his services.

The report further suggests that Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is firmly in United’s sights as a potential replacement for Martinez at the centre of their defence.

The young Everton star has long been on United’s radar, with the Toffees having rejected several bids of up to £50million back in the summer of 2024.

Martinez has been a key figure for United this season, lining up as the left-sided centre-back alongside Harry Maguire.

Speaking ahead of the Leeds clash, boss Michael Carrick confirmed the controversy surrounding Martinez’s bombshell interview had been sorted out internally.

He stated: “He’s released his statement, he’s realised he’s made a mistake and that’s enough for all of us to move on with.

“From our point of view, the acknowledgment of what’s been done has certainly been enough. We’ve moved on and we’re definitely not looking back at it now.

“I understand emotion at times. We ask for passion, we ask for emotion, we ask for fire and we ask for players to care. There’s a way of doing that and that’s already been acknowledged.

“We need to carry that intensity and that willingness and that togetherness and that spirit. As a group, we need to use it, and we’ve got to use it in the right way.”
