A driver whose car dramatically smashed through a front window before landing upside down in a family living room was being chased by cops at the time, according to a statement by local police.

The Seat Leon ploughed into the property in the village of Chirk Bank, Wrexham, following a short police pursuit at around 10pm on Saturday (Oct 31).

The vehicle careered through a road closure before smashing into the living room, but miraculously, the occupants of the home were uninjured. The car remained upside down inside the house the following morning (Sun), while the driver was arrested and taken to hospital.

“One ambulance attended the scene. The driver, a man, sustained potentially serious injuries in the collision. He received treatment on scene before being conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further care.”

The car is understood to have ploughed through metal fencing blocking a bridge over the Shropshire Union Canal, which is currently undergoing repair work.

One neighbour told how the car then hit debris on the bridge before careering down a bank for around 20 metres and straight through the living room of the house, which was formerly the village’s post office and shop until it closed in 2000.

Neighbour Ella St John said the aftermath of the crash looked like a “warzone”.

She said: “I was just sitting in the living room watching the TV waiting for Tom Jones to come on and I just heard this almighty bang.I saw all these lights flashing, there were all these stones all over the path, I could not believe it. It was like a warzone when I came out.”

Another neighbour, Mick Holford, said: “It sounded like an explosion.I looked out the back because I thought something had fallen off an aeroplane or something.

“Then I looked out the front and there was a lot of shouting and blue lights and trying to get the bloke out of the car, so I thought ‘I don’t know what’s going on here’ and shut the door.”
