‘Humiliated’ spouse discovered about husband’s new bride after he despatched out marriage ceremony invitations on Facebook

A bigamist texted his wife to say he was marrying someone else by text before the wedding invites were sent out on Facebook. David Curtis “humiliated” his first wife by saying he no longer wished to be with her before jetting to Thailand to marry his new bride.

His actions were found out when his first wife discovered he had sent invitations to his second wedding ceremony via Facebook. In a victim impact statement, she revealed how she was going through surgery at the time she found out about his bigamy and was later made redundant from her job, reports NottinghamLive.

Now Curtis, a 56-year-old grandfather, has been spared an immediate prison term for his crime.

Handing him a six-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, Judge Sunil Khanna said: “You and (your first wife) were married on September 18, 2015 and on April 8 you sent her a text message saying you wanted a break but it transpired it was more than just a break you wanted.

“She was left humiliated and devastated as a consequence of what you had done to her. I have read her victim impact statement and it is clear this had a very distressing effect on her.”

Jade Salter, prosecuting at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court, said Curtis and his first wife were married in Chesterfield in April 2015. She said on April 4, last year, he sent her the messages saying he wanted to end their marriage.

The prosecutor said: “He took his passport and in May, 2025, went abroad where it transpired that in October wedding invitations were sent out on Facebook.

“On October 22, 2025, a wedding ceremony took place in Kap Choeng, Thailand between the defendant and (the new Thai wife). He was arrested on his return to England on February 26, 2026 at Heathrow Airport and, to his credit, he made full admissions about the wedding ceremony.”

Miss Salter read out part of a four-page impact statement made by the defendant’s first wife. In it she said she has been “left feeling vulnerable and frightened” calling her now ex-husband’s actions “impulsive”.

She said: “She said she was devastated to find out through social media he was engaged and then there was a wedding ceremony involving another woman. She was going through surgery at the time and she was made redundant.”

Curtoi, formerly of Larchdale Close, South Normanton and now of Peel Mill, Commercial Street, Leeds, appeared over a videolink with his solicitor, Tim Gaubert, for this week’s hearing where he pleaded guilty to bigamy.

He has no previous convictions. Mr Gaubert said: “He sent invites out to his close family asking them if they wanted to come to the ceremony.

“It is not a case where he sneaked out (of the country) and got married. He put it in the public sphere. There is no doubt whatsoever that the victim was caused distress. There can be no two ways about it.

“He is now divorced from the complainant , he has a good job and he takes home £3,900 per month. He has now sought to build bridges with his extended family – his brothers, mother, children and grandchildren and there has been contact in that regard.

“Looking back he knows he should have dealt with things differently.”

As part of the suspended sentence, the judge ordered Curtis to carry out 100 hours unpaid work. He was also ordered to pay £650 costs and a £154 victim surcharge.
