Andy Burnham has commended the bravery showed by those who spoke up about Russell Brand while condemning the comedian’s “horrifying” actions.
Brand faces a substantial time behind bars for his sick crimes, which including the rape of one of his fans as well as three other counts of sexual assault. Speaking to Times Radio, Burnham said: “”It’s horrifying what Russell Brand has done. I’d firstly like to praise the bravery of the women, the victims in the case, who’ve come forward and had the courage to speak out.
The Prime Minister also personally praised the journalists who worked on uncovering Brand’s sick acts, saying they “supported those who had been abused by Russell Brand and worse.”
He concluded that “all of them deserve our praise for having that courage to stand forward.”
Burnham’s comments come after Brand was found guilty of four sexual offences after a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
The disgraced TV and film star was found not guilty of two other counts of rape and one of attempted sexual assault. He was refused bail and will spend the next few days in custody before being sentenced on Monday.
Brand is also facing further allegations of rape made by two women and has been questioned by the police regarding the complaints as part of what the Metropolitan Police have called an “ongoing” investigation.
At his sentencing, Brand stood outside the door of the dock shortly before the jury delivered their verdicts. He reportedly swapped a brief glance at his wife, Laura, saying: “Laura, I love you.”
Wearing a grey three-piece suit, the comic and broadcaster appeared to be praying in the dock before he was convicted of four offences, including the rape of a fan at his North London townhouse.
