Marco Rubio ‘planning to resign’ after Republican defeat in midterms
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is reportedly one of five members of US President Donald Trump’s current cabinet who are thought to be considering resignation
Another Trump administration official could jump ship after the Republican Party’s dismal performance in the midterm elections this week. He could now look to run for president, according to reports.
US President Donald Trump’s inner circle could face a major shake-up as Democrats take control of the House and Senate next year. The latest member of Mr Trump’s cabinet considering his future is US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Mr Rubio is reportedly one of five members of President Trump’s current cabinet who are thought to be considering resignation after the Democrats’ blue wave washed over the US. His future: a possible race for the Republican candidacy in 2028.
The Independent has reported the development, citing anonymous sources who are said to be close to Mr Rubio. A Republican source reportedly told the news outlet, “Rubio will be gone after the midterms.”
The source added, “There will be about four or five them running for the hills. The country has completely turned against Trump. People cannot even say where Iran is on a map and do not get this war.”
However, Mr Rubio’s office has shut down the allegations. Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of state, told NewsNation, “This is complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid.
“The Secretary has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump’s administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax,” he added.
Despite reports that cabinet members are looking to leave Mr Trump’s office, the US leader said Tuesday night that he does not plan to make changes to his cabinet.
Multiple members of President Trump’s cabinet could become the renewed targets of impeachment investigations.
The possible targets are Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. and Education Secretary Linda McMahon, who were all subjects of impeachment investigations or inquiries prior to the midterm elections.
The Daily Star reported this week that it appears someone else will carry the can for the collapse in voter confidence. That someone is tipped to be one of the most vocal champions for the war that destroyed Republican support: Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
