He then signed for Broughty Athletic in 2024, remaining a key figure in their squad right up until his untimely passing. As a mark of respect, the club has postponed their match against Dundee North End.
A Broughty Athletic spokesperson said: “It is with sadness tonight we announce the sudden passing of our full back Michael Cruickshank, who tragically died last night following a car accident.
“Michael ‘Cruicky’ was a very well loved and respected member of our squad and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Cruicky,” reports the Daily Record.
Heartfelt tributes poured in from Michael’s former clubs following the news of his death. Brechin City chairman Kevin Mackie said everyone at the club is “absolutely devastated” to learn of Michael’s death.
He continued: “This is hugely difficult to write at this time. Michael was one of life’s diamonds. His wonderful energy, positive attitude and warmth meant so much to those around him.
“He will be deeply missed by us all. We send all our love and heartfelt condolences to Ashley, Heather, Hollie and the rest of his friends and family at this heartbreaking time.”
A representative from Carnoustie Panmourse said: “Those who had the pleasure of sharing a dressing room with him will remember not only what a talented footballer he was, but more importantly, what a genuinely lovely, funny and great guy he was to have around.
“He always brought a smile and plenty of laughs, and this news is incredibly difficult to comprehend.”
Montrose Roslea JFC said: “It is with great sadness that we relay the tragic news that former player Michael Cruickshank sadly passed away in a car accident.
“Words will never replace someone but we can try to help by speaking about what a terrific person he was whilst with Roselea.”
