Terrified Russell Brand is having his prison ordeal made a misery by hundreds of jeering inmates taunting him with sickening football-style chants. The disgraced comic, 51, was hauled to Victorian hellhole HMP Wandsworth on Thursday after being convicted of rape and three sexual assaults.

Bored lags inside the crumbling, vermin-ridden south London nick have now reportedly turned the former Hollywood star into a target for their entertainment.

It’s claimed they have been repeatedly screaming a foul chant through the landings: “There’s a Brand new n***e on the wing! A Brand new n***e. Brand, you c***, you ain’t so f***ing lairy now.”

The crude abuse comes as Brand scrambles to adjust to the grim reality of life on Wandsworth’s notorious vulnerable prisoners’ unit, with the judge warning him to brace for a large sentence when he returns to Southwark Crown Court on Monday.

The fallen star arrived so hopelessly unprepared for life behind bars that he did not even bring a change of clothes, according to a report in The Mail on Sunday.

The paper revealed Brand has been left to hand-wash his own gear in a tiny cell basin and drape it over a heating pipe running through the jail just to keep clean.

After an assistant governor bluntly warned the shamed star to “expect the rough with the smooth”, the born-again Christian sought solace with the prison chaplain to pray.

Cons are locked in their cells from 4.30pm until 8am due to crippling weekend staffing shortages, which a source told the Mail led bored prisoners to start targeting the high-profile lag.

“Brand only leaves his cell to collect his food at mealtimes before returning. He is going around like a shadow,” the source said.

“So far it’s only been verbal abuse but that doesn’t mean that if somehow another prisoner bumps into him it won’t be just verbal as any celebrity is a high-end target.”

Fears are also mounting that the shamed actor will soon face extortion from inmates demanding protection money on the wing.

The source said: “No doubt he’s probably going to end up having to line their pockets in order to have a slightly safer and more comfortable time.”
