A former Manchester City striker and Premier League star has sadly died at the age of 59. His former clubs paid touching tributes to the player who made his debut at just 16.

Darren Beckford’s death was announced by his former clubs on social media on Sunday. The Manchester-born forward came through City’s youth academy and made his first-team debut in 1984 at just 16 years old.

He went out on loan to Bury and Port Vale before securing a permanent switch to Vale in 1987, kicking off an impressive four-year stint where he turned out more than 150 times. After two years at Norwich, Beckford moved to Oldham in 1993 for £300,000, making 52 appearances and netting 11 goals.
