All we know about the Bondi Beach terror attack from father and ‘loner’ son killers to hero
- A terrorist attack occurred at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, targeting a Jewish festival on the first day of Hanukkah.
- The attack resulted in 15 fatalities, including a 10-year-old girl and a British-born rabbi, and left 42 people injured, with 24 people still receiving hospital care across Sydney as of Tuesday afternoon. Two officers suffered gunshot wounds.
- Named victims include British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, 10-year-old Matilda, French national Dan Elkayam, and former police officer Peter Meagher.
- Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, is being hailed as a hero for tackling one of the gunmen and wrestling his weapon away, with a public fundraising campaign raising over 1.1 million Australian dollars set up in his support. His family previously said he was in hospital with bullet wounds to his arm and hand, but was in “good spirits”.
- The gunmen were identified as 50-year old Sajid Akram and his 24-year old son Naveed Akram; Sajid was shot dead by police at the scene. Naveed Akram was taken to hospital with critical injuries and expected to face criminal charges.
- Naveed, the 24-year-old son, was described as a ‘loner’ and out-of-work bricklayer who lived with his parents and younger siblings. His mother, Verena, insisted he was a ‘good boy’ incapable of violence and revealed he had deceived the family about his weekend plans, claiming he was fishing and scuba diving with his father.
- Three firearms, two “active” explosive devices and two homemade Islamic State flags were seized by police. Additional firearms were found from searches in the NSW area and at the Bondi beach scene.
- Early indications suggested the attackers were “inspired by” IS. The NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team has launched an investigation, including a probe into a trip the two men took to the Phillippines last month.
- The King, the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, and the Foreign Secretary have all responded to the attack, and the UK’s Chief Rabbi is traveling to Sydney to meet the Jewish community.
