UK set to freeze over New Year’s as Met Office guidelines on ‘wintery hazards’

Partygoers planning to ring in 2026 in style are being warned to layer up, as the Met Office predicts a chilly New Year with near or below-average temperatures and the risk of rain or wintry showers

If you’re planning to dress to the nines to celebrate the end of this year, you may want to make sure your nines are layered up. Forecasters are predicting a chilly start to 2026, with temperatures hovering near or just below average.

As a result, the risk of rain or even wintry showers, as well as brisk northerly winds, may make those party outfits feel a lot less glamorous.

According to the Met Office’s long-range forecast for Tuesday December 30 to Thursday January 8, high pressure is likely to dominate across the UK through to the end of the year, centred to the west or northwest over the North Atlantic.

This will likely maintain relatively settled conditions at first, but with a little light rain or drizzle in places and a few showers possible along some coasts exposed to the northerly wind, the Met stated. Around the turn of the year, high pressure is likely to shift a little farther away from the UK, allowing a greater chance of more changeable conditions to develop.

This will bring an increased risk of some rain or showers at times which, with cold air close to the UK, may bring some wintry hazards to some places, the Met announced. Temperatures will probably be near or slightly below average for this period overall.

In other, more mystical New Year’s predictions, Baba Vanga’s name has emerged once more, with devotees re-examining one of her most controversial prophecies that some believe might relate to 2026: the prediction stating our civilisation is approaching a moment where it discovers “it has gone too far”.

According to believers, the mystic predicted a year when specialists and societies collectively would recognise they had overstepped ethical and technological boundaries, the Daily Star previously reported.

They also claimed that instead of being one devastating incident, the awakening would emerge through escalating worldwide tensions and scientific advances that would transform human relationships.

Beyond the technological concerns, Sky History observed that whilst numerous Baba Vanga’s economic downfall predictions are linked to 2025, interpretations of her visions suggested to followers that financial turmoil will persist globally through 2026, the Express reported.

Believers also reference her supposed alerts regarding uncontrolled progress in science and healthcare, with the Daily Mail emphasising one of her prophecies about the rapid advancement in artificial biology and organ substitution.

On the same note, Baba Vanga was also attributed with predicting the large-scale manufacturing of artificial organs by 2046 at the earliest. The blurred lines between technology and morality she alluded to are often associated with her supposed forecasts of significant advancements in cancer detection.

Her followers suggest that by 2026, blood tests capable of detecting multiple types of cancer at an early stage could gradually be implemented in at least one major country. They argued that while such tests could enable doctors to identify aggressive tumours early, they might also spark concerns about false positives, healthcare expenses and the prioritisation of certain groups.
