Diva of divorce units up store in Milan as wealthy flee Britain

A top family law firm founded by ‘diva of divorce’ Ayesha Vardag is to open a new office in Milan on Friday to cash in on a flood of rich expats fleeing Britain for Italy in the wake of Labour’s tax raids.

Her firm, Vardags, which helps the rich reach settlements when their marriages end, is cited as the go-to place for footballers, billionaires, and Middle Eastern royalty.

She told The Mail on Sunday the ‘exodus’ of the rich to Italy, with its more favourable tax regime than the UK, had ‘crystallised the timing’ for the new office.

She said Italy was luring the ‘super-rich because they want that investment, and now England is philosophically opposed to that’, adding: ‘It’s depressing for anyone keen to make Britain as prosperous as possible.’

Vardags’ notable past clients include German heiress Katrin Radmacher, who in 2010 scored a major win when the UK courts ruled prenuptial contracts were binding.

In 2017, she secured £64million for Pauline Chai, a former beauty queen and ex-wife of then-Laura Ashley chairman Khoo Kay Peng.

She said the timing of the Milan opening was also because New Year is a peak time for couples to file for divorce, saying: ‘People look at Christmas as a kind of barometer of how their relationship’s going.’
