Storm Goretti forces UK colleges to shut as Brits brace for 100mph battering
The Met Office has issued a serious amber warning for Storm Goretti, with winds of up to 100mph forecast in the south of the country – this is a breaking news story
Schools in Cornwall are shutting their doors early as Storm Goretti approaches the county. The weather is set to take a drastic turn this afternoon (Thursday, January 8) with the arrival of the storm, and the Met Office has issued warnings for potential wind speeds reaching a staggering 100mph.
A severe amber weather warning is currently in effect. In light of the alarming forecast, school authorities have decided to take significant precautions.
By midday, 12 schools had already announced plans to close early today, beginning at 2pm, reports Cornwall Live. Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “Storm Goretti will be a multi-hazard event, with the most significant impacts from snow in parts of Wales and the Midlands and the very strong winds in the far South West, though heavy rain in some parts of Wales and East Anglia also has the potential to bring disruption to many.
“Goretti will bring snow on its northern edge, this most likely over Wales and the Midlands. Here accumulations of 10-15cm are likely widely, with 20-30cm possible in some places, especially higher ground in Wales and the Peak District.
“An amber warning has been issued where the greatest risk of disruption is likely on Thursday night into Friday morning. This is a complex spell of severe weather and I’d advise people in the warning areas to keep up to date with the forecast and messages from local authorities.”
The Met Office says the storm will cause travel disruption on the roads, in the air and on bus and train services, while power cuts pose further risks. Some communities could even be cut off entirely and mobile phone coverage may be affected, the weather agency has warned.
As many as 96 areas are covered by snow warnings today. Snow is set to blanket huge parts of England and Wales, with 30cm expected in the Midlands and Wales. The cold snap has already led to the closure of more than 1,000 schools across the UK earlier this week.
