Minneapolis college students given choice to be taught from dwelling as lethal ICE taking pictures rattles colleges

Students in Minneapolis public schools have been given an option to learn from home for the next month amid concerts the fatal shooting of a mother-of-three will spark further civil unrest.

Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot in the head three times by agent Jonathan Ross while inside her SUV on Wednesday, sparking mass protests in the streets and outrage from Minnesota lawmakers.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the National Guard on Thursday and  Minneapolis Public Schools canceled classes for the remainder of the week in an effort to shield students from any major civil unrest.

But now the district has gone a step further by offering E-learning as an option for all families through to February 12.

The extraordinary step is in response to a suggestion from the teacher’s federation as fury spreads across the nation.

On Thursday, two more people were shot by US Customs and Border Protection agents during operations in Oregon.

The conditions of the two latest shooting victims is not yet clear, but Portland City Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney said she had been informed they were both still alive.

Meanwhile in Minnesota, Walz  signed an executive order to activate the National Guard in the city, noting ‘Minnesotans are feeling scared, angry, and disillusioned.’

Superintendent Drew Evans said Thursday that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension had stepped away from the investigation, with the FBI taking over the case.

Walz said that ‘people in positions of power’ had made ‘verifiably false, verifiably inaccurate’ conclusions about the case and that ‘Minnesota must be part of this investigation’ in a press conference on Thursday.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed the shooting was an act of self-defense, but the city’s Democrat Mayor Jacob Frey has blasted ICE’s characterization of the shooting and told them to ‘get the f**k out of Minneapolis.’

DHS had deployed more than 2,000 officers to the area in what it says is its largest-ever immigration enforcement operation.

Public school students across Minneapolis given option to learn from home for one month amid fears over civil unrest

All Minneapolis Public Schools will offer students E-learning classes until February 12 out of an abundance of caution following the shooting death of Renee Good.

Classes were canceled on Thursday and will remain canceled on Friday due to heightened tensions across the city.

But now, the school district has gone one step further following a request from the teachers’ federation.

‘MPS is going to be offering an option for students to learn from home until February 12,’ Marcia Howard, the President of the Minneapolis Federation of Educators, revealed on social media on Thursday night.

‘This is an OPTION and exactly what so many families need right now. MFE members brought this to MPS and MPS listened. Let’s stay strong together Minneapolis.’

Generally, E-learning and learning from home is only offered during extreme weather events.

But there are concerns about protests and civil unrest after an ICE agent shot Good while she was in her car during an immigration operation.

All district-sponsored programs, including athletics and community education classes, were also canceled for the remainder of the week.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek says shooting was ‘instigated by the reckless actions of the Trump administration’

‘When a president endorses tearing families apart and attempts to govern through fear and hate, you foster an environment of lawlessness and recklessness.

‘Federal agents are shattering trust. They are hurting people and they are destroying people, day by day, what we hold dear: our sense of safety.

‘I’m so thankful that noone died, and that more people weren’t hurt.’

Department of Homeland Security says agent who shot two in Portland ‘feared for his life’

Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin has addressed the shooting in Portland, arguing that the agent involved ‘feared for his life and safety’ after a motorist attempted to ‘weaponize his vehicle’ and run the agent over.

It is the same argument that was made regarding the shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

‘Here are the facts,’ she said. ‘US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon.

‘The passenger of the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland.

‘The vehicle driver is believed to be a member of the vicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

‘When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents.

‘Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired defensive shots. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene.’

Portland’s Democrat Mayor breaks his silence on double shooting

Portland’s Democrat Mayor Keith Wilson has slammed ICE and demanded agents ‘end all operations in Portland’ following news of a double shooting on Thursday.

‘Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident,’ he said in a statement.

‘Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot and injured by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

‘We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts.

‘Portland is not a “training ground” for militarized agents, and the “full force” threatened by the administration has deadly consequences.

‘As Mayor, I call on ICE to end all operations in Portland until a full investigation can be completed.’

Wilson argued that ‘federal militarization undermines effective, community‑based public safety, and it runs counter to the values that define our region.

‘I will use every legal and legislative tool available to protect our residents’ civil and human rights.’

Speaking directly to voters, Wilson called on ‘every Portlander to represent our values and to show up with calm and purpose during this difficult time.

‘Portland does not respond to violence with violence. We respond with clarity, unity, and a commitment to justice. We must stand together to protect Portland.’
