Man discovered lifeless at college by ‘screaming pupil’ sees tributes paid to ‘top bloke’

The man found dead by pupils during a PE lesson at Smestow Academy, a school in Wolverhampton, has been named locally as tributes have been paid calling him a ‘top man’ online

Tributes have been paid to after man was tragically found dead within the grounds of a school in Wolverhampton.

An 11-year-old girl was left ‘really shaken up’ and was reportedly ‘screaming’ after she discovered the body of the man during a PE lesson at a school.

The pupil spotted the body when she made her way onto the playing fields at Smestow Academy at around 10am yesterday (January 19).

Emergency services were called to the school on Windmill Crescent after a 45-year-old man was found with injuries. He sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The death of the man, who has been named on social media as Neil, is currently being treated as unexplained.

One tribute read: “Rip brother, top man. We got some good memories, you’ll be missed by many.”

Another said: “What a top bloke, was any chatting to him other day.”

A third wrote: “A proper genuine bloke, the locals never going to be the same again, rest easy brother.”

It is understood that her year seven class were the first to have the subject this week, and no pupils had been on the field prior to the start of the lesson.

The father of the girl said: “My daughter phoned her mom up, screaming, and told her that she found a dead body by the goal posts on the field.

“She’s only 11 years of age. They went out for PE and it was very foggy this morning.

“It’s left her really shaken up and we’ve come to take her out of school early. It’s terrible what she’s had to see.”

One parent commented on Facebook: “My nephew’s class were the ones that found him. The school have offered counselling. Rest In Peace.”

In a statement released last night, Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole, from West Midlands Police, said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation, and I would ask that people do not speculate on the circumstances.

“We know this has caused concern in the community and there will be extra officers in the area for reassurance.

“Anyone who may have seen the victim in the early hours of this morning is urged to get in touch with us.”
