Prince Harry in tears as he claims life with Meghan was ‘made an absolute distress’

Prince Harry is among seven high-profile individuals, including Sir Elton John, suing the publisher of the Mail on Sunday and MailOnline over alleged misuse of private information

Prince Harry appeared on the verge of tears as he concluded his evidence at the High Court by saying: “They have made my wife’s life an absolute misery, my Lord.”

The Duke of Sussex is among seven individuals, including Sir Elton John, taking legal action against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL) at the Royal Courts of Justice over claims the company misused their private information. ANL refutes all allegations.

Today Harry informed the court that “my social circles were not leaky” during his evidence – and rejected claims he used a Facebook account called “Mr Mischief” to communicate with a journalist.

In his witness statement for the proceedings, the Duke of Sussex revealed he has consistently maintained an “uneasy relationship” with the media. He stated: “Following the death of my mother in 1997 when I was 12 years old and her treatment at the hands of the press, I have always had an uneasy relationship with them.

“However, as a member of the Institution the policy was to ‘never complain, never explain’. There was no alternative; I was conditioned to accept it. For the most part, I accepted the interest in my performing my public functions.”

During today’s proceedings, Harry informed Antony White KC, representing ANL, it was “pretty convincing” that journalists had obtained information about him from his associates around the time the stories were published. When Mr White suggested that the duke “did not complain and no complaint was made on your behalf” regarding the articles Harry was aware of, he responded: “Not that I am aware of.”

Mr White went on to say: “”That is because you believed, at the time that the articles were published, in so far as you saw them, that the information they contained came from legitimate sources.”

Harry responded: “To a certain extent, but I would not have been able to complain about them anyway, because of the institution I was in.”

Prince Harry said attacks on Meghan Markle led to him taking legal action against the publisher of The Daily Mail, the High Court has heard.

The Duke of Sussex said things changed after marrying Meghan and seeing “persistent attacks” and some ‘racist articles’. He said in his witness statement that he took action after having his own legal advice.
