Man Utd affirm Casemiro will depart the membership in a shock assertion

Manchester United have announced that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season, with the 33-year-old set to become a free agent

Manchester United have confirmed that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old midfielder is set to become a free agent in the summer despite becoming a regular again at Old Trafford this season. Casemiro signed from Real Madrid in a £70million move in 2022 and has been a crucial part of the team since his arrival.

Casemiro enjoyed a revival under Ruben Amorim and also started Michael Carrick’s first game in charge against Manchester City. But in a surprise announcement, United confirmed out of the blue that Casemiro will not sign a new contract to remain at Old Trafford.

“Casemiro will leave Manchester United this summer, upon the expiry of his contract,” the club announced.

“The legendary midfielder has enjoyed four seasons at the club, playing 146 games and scoring 21 goals to date. A serial winner, Casemiro was unveiled at Old Trafford in August 2022, and quickly became a fan favourite due to his combative nature and ability to score goals at crucial times.

“The Brazil captain played a major role in helping United to win the 2023 Carabao Cup, scoring a header in a colossal performance against Newcastle United. The 33-year-old also won the Emirates FA Cup in 2024.

“Supporters will have the opportunity to recognise Casemiro’s contributions at the final home game of the season, against Nottingham Forest.”

Casemiro added: “I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life. From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months. We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”

United’s announcement comes as the club continues their pursuit to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window. The club have also been linked with summer moves for Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson as long-term successors to Casemiro.

Deals for those three Premier League stars aren’t expected this month, but the club are exploring options this month to bolster Michael Carrick’s midfield, with Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte the only first-team options to play across two midfield positions.

Ruben Neves, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Wilfred Ndidi have all been linked with a short-term or cut-price move to Old Trafford before the February 2 deadline.
