Mexico horror as gunmen shoot 11 folks useless after storming soccer pitch

At least 11 people have died and 12 others injured after gunmen opened fire at a football pitch in central Mexico – it comes as part of a part of a ‘crime wave’ plaguing the city

A horrific attack in central Mexico has left at least 11 people dead and a further 12 injured, after gunmen stormed a football pitch and opened fire, according to local authorities.

The mayor of Salamanca, Cesar Prieto, revealed that the assailants struck as a match was concluding. Tragically, 10 people lost their lives on the spot, with another succumbing to their injuries in hospital.

Among the wounded were a woman and a child.

Mayor Prieto described the incident as part of a “crime wave” plaguing the city, and pleaded with Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum for assistance in curbing the escalating violence.

The state prosecutor’s office in Guanajuato is currently investigating the incident and working alongside federal authorities to bolster security in the region.

Guanajuato, unfortunately, topped the list for the highest number of homicides in Mexico last year. The area has been a battleground for the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the formidable Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

“Unfortunately, there are criminal groups trying to subjugate authorities, something they are not going to achieve,” Mayor Prieto stated.

Despite the government’s claim that Mexico’s murder rate in 2025 was the lowest since 2016, with 17.5 murders per 100,000 inhabitants, analysts have warned that these figures may not fully capture the extent of the country’s violent reality.
