The Kray twins such as you’ve by no means seen them earlier than: Holiday images of infamous East End gangster brothers Ronnie and Reggie go on sale

Holiday snaps that Reggie Kray kept in his prison cell to remind him of happier times have emerged in a fascinating archive relating to the East End villain.

The photos show Reggie and twin brother Ronnie enjoying the sunny weather at the Essex holiday park, where they were known to have a caravan.

One image shows Reggie driving a convertible car in the sunshine.

Others show a dapper-looking Reggie standing in sand dunes, riding a horse, and standing outside their caravan.

There is also a group photo of the pair enjoying drinks in the clubhouse during a meeting of the Steeple Bay Caravan Club.

It is thought the snaps date to the summer of 1965, a few years before they were locked up for life for murder.

A trove of landscape paintings of idyllic countryside scenes produced by Reggie while in prison is also in the archive, as is his copy of the Bible, a reflection on his finding Christianity while inside.

There is also his own DVD copy of the 1990 biopic The Krays, starring Gary and Martin Kemp.

The items were given by Kray to a visitor at HMP Wayland in Norfolk in 1999, a year before he died of bladder cancer.

With them are prison release applications signed by Reggie Kray requesting permission for him to give the items to his next visitor.

The archive is now coming up for sale at auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son of Devizes, Wilts.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: ‘These are some of the prized possessions of one of the most notorious gangsters of the 20th century that he kept in his prison cell.

‘Some of the photos have been seen before, but we can say for sure that these are the original prints that Reggie Kray owned.

‘This archive was given by him to someone who was visiting him in jail.’

Mr Aldridge described the seven watercolour paintings by Kray as ‘naive’.

They include his depiction of Dunstanburgh Castle in Northumberland.

Reggie Kray was serving a life sentence for the gangland murder of Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie.

Kray, who alongside brother Ronnie ran the most notorious and feared gang in London in the 1960s, became a keen amateur artist during his 31 years behind bars.

He was diagnosed with terminal bladder cancer in 2000 and was released from prison in August 2000 on compassionate grounds. He died from terminal cancer aged 66 on October 1.

His twin brother, who was jailed for life for the murder of gangster George Cornell, died in 1995.

The items are estimated to sell for hundreds of pounds at the auction, which will take place on Saturday.
