Donald Trump takes intention at Keir Starmer in scathing tirade amid his China go to

Donald Trump, the US President, has issued a stark warning to Keir Starmer, who is still in Beijing as part of a three-day trip to China where he met Xi Jinping

Donald Trump has blasted Keir Starmer’s “very dangerous” efforts to seek closer ties with China.

The US President fired off a warning to the Prime Minister, who is still in Beijing as part of a three-day trip to China. Keir Starmer held warm talks with US President Xi Jinping on Thursday, with both leaders agreeing to deepen their alliance.

But Mr Trump took a swipe at the visit as he spoke to reporters during the premier of the Melanie movie. Asked for his views on the UK getting into business with China, he said: “Well, it’s very dangerous for them to do that, and it’s even more dangerous, I think, for Canada to get into business with China. Canada is not doing well.

“They’re doing very poorly, and you can’t look at China as the answer. I know China very well. I know President Xi is a friend of mine. I know him very well. But that’s a, that’s a big hurdle to go over when you get Canada.”

Mr Trump has threatened Canada with 100% tariffs over a potential trade deal with China. The US President said in a post on Truth Social on Thursday, January 29, that he will charge the US neighbour a 50% tariff on all aircrafts sold to his country after he said Canada has refused to certify several Gulfstream jets.

It comes after Mr Starmer promised a more “sophisticated” relationship with China as he inked a deal for visa-free travel and left the door open to a UK visit for Xi Jinping.

The Prime Minister spent around three hours with the Chinese President on Thursday, who rolled out the red carpet with a lavish banquet and a ceremonial welcome at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People.

The pair bonded over football and Shakespeare at the landmark talks, which were described as warm by Downing Street. But the PM challenged President Xi on several tense subjects, including the imprisonment of pro-democracy campaigner and British national Jimmy Lai.

He also raised the Ukraine war but the PM refused to spell out whether he exerted pressure on Beijing to do more to restrain Russia. The visit comes as Mr Starmer seeks to mend ties with the world’s second largest economy after relations deteriorated amid rows over Chinese espionage, human rights and national security.

Britain and China must “work together for the sake of world peace and stability” in tumultuous times, the Chinese President said earlier this week. Mr Jinping said the world was in a “turbulent and fluid” state.
