Moment moped raiders return to London jewellers in entrance of police to swipe ‘excessive worth’ gems they dropped on the street throughout getaway

This is the moment that moped raiders returned to a London jewellers they had burgled minutes earlier to swipe ‘high value’ gems that were dropped during the getaway.

Several men attacked Sultan Jewellers on Uxbridge Road in Shepherd’s Bush, west London, smashing the shop’s windows with a sledgehammer at around 3.30am on Thursday before fleeing as police arrived.

But CCTV footage obtained by the Daily Mail shows two men on a moped returning to the scene to retrieve what appeared to be stolen jewellery they left behind.

Two police officers seen on film attempt to chase the suspects on foot before the thieves escaped for a second time.

Out of shot, the Met say other police staff caught up with one other and managed to wrestle the valuables from him.

A force spokesperson said: ‘The first officers were on scene within around three minutes of the initial alarm call and chased a number of offenders who were trying to break into the shop.

‘They detained one of the men around 40 yards further down the road and, while trying to secure him on the ground, were subjected to threats with a weapon from another suspect who was riding a moped.

‘Further officers arrived to support their colleagues around a minute and a half later.

‘They gave chase to the remaining offenders and were able to secure items that the thieves had scattered in the street.

‘Officers then secured the scene to ensure that opportunities to carry out forensics were not lost.

‘We have already charged one man with burglary and criminal damage.

‘Our investigations into this incident continue and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference CAD732/29JAN.’

At 3.27am, three mopeds raced down Uxbridge Road towards the jewellers before the thieves appeared to begin smashing their way through the shop’s security shutters with tools as sparks flew in the air.

Police arrived within three minutes of reports that the brazen criminals were attempting to burgle the shop ‘before stealing high-value jewellery’.

As officers attempted to apprehend the gang, one of the moped riders steered the vehicle in circles while waiting for his accomplice.

A man then jumped on the back of the moped.

However he appeared to drop a number of items on the floor outside the jewellers before the pair sped off from police and were followed by another moped rider.

But – less than one minute later – two mopeds returned and a passenger jumped off to swipe the gems they left behind.

As the gang made their second escape, two officers chased them down the road on foot before returning to the scene where a man was arrested.

Jason Daley, 33, of Brent, northwest London, was charged with burglary and criminal damage, and remanded in custody overnight.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police said on Friday that the search to find ‘a number of other suspects’ who fled officers on mopeds remains on going.

At least four police vehicles appear to have attended the scene.

The high street was blocked off by officers – and a police cordon remained in place for more than 12 hours after the theft.

Shards of broken glass and jewellery were left strewn on the ground outside.

Jack Stones, the landlord at the Defectors Weld pub on Uxbridge Road, said he saw fresh blood on the pavement outside the jewellers hours later when he walked past at 7am.

The attack comes amid a wave of jewellery heists in west London.

Crime gangs have also targeted stores in Knightsbridge and Richmond in the past week, smashing windows, ramming SUVs into barred doors and driving motorbikes through glass store fronts.

In broad daylight on Saturday morning, brazen thieves attacked the family-owned jewellers Gregory & Co in Richmond.

Footage shared widely on social media showed the moment that criminals swung a large hammer against the glass window at the front of the store before peeling it away and filling a blue bag with all the valuables on display.

And on Tuesday, January 20, several armed attackers rushed a Bucherer Rolex Boutique at One Hyde Park stealing thousands of pounds worth of watches from the Knightsbridge store

Footage from the incident came following reports that men wearing motorcycle helmets had barged in and threatened staff with weapons before stealing several items.

The attack in Shepherd’s Bush on Tuesday came nearly seven years after three armed men smashed into the neighbouring shop with a Range Rover.

In October 2019, the e-Smart Money foreign exchange, which was linked internally to the jewellers, was targeted by thieves who crashed through the shop’s window.

A thief wearing a motorcycle helmet ran out with a sledgehammer.

But bystanders decided to take matters into their own hands, restraining one of the three attackers, Ben Wegener, as they tried to flee the scene.

Pedestrians attempted to restrain him after he dropped a bag and fell down in the road, pummeling him on the street, as witnesses filmed the incident.

The thief was then pushed to the ground when he tried to get up.

Wegener, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after he and two accomplices attacked the store.

He pleaded guilty to robbery, dangerous driving, possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage and receiving stolen goods – but the two other suspects escaped.

The Range Rover, which was stolen and had fake number plates, was later recovered by police.
