John Virgo’s remaining phrases on BBC earlier than star’s demise as snooker world mourns legend
Legendary snooker commentator John Virgo has died at the age of 79, just weeks after voicing the Masters final on the BBC as Kyren Wilson lifted his second Triple Crown title
John Virgo delivered a heartfelt tribute to Kyren Wilson in what would tragically become his final BBC commentary before passing away at the age of 79. The devastating news broke on Wednesday morning, just weeks after Virgo had provided commentary for this year’s Masters final.
Wilson clinched a commanding 10-6 triumph over John Higgins to secure the silverware and pocket a massive £350,000 prize fund.
Virgo, beloved by fans as snooker’s distinctive voice, was positioned in the commentary box and was swift to heap praise on Wilson after his victory. Heartbreakingly, his commentary as the 34-year-old sank the green to seal the final frame would mark his last appearance on the BBC.

“And now he can relax, the job is done,” declared Virgo. “Runner-up twice in the Masters but a winner this time. John Higgins will approach the table and shake his hand and say: ‘Well played’.
“John Higgins was disappointing, he had a great run to the final but just couldn’t produce it today. But Kyren Wilson, every credit, he’s been the big scorer all through the tournaments.”
“And it’s Kyren Wilson now who is the Johnstone’s Paint Masters champion, his second Triple Crown victory!”.
Following his retirement from professional snooker in 1994, Virgo carved out a distinguished broadcasting career with the BBC. Throughout his competitive years, he claimed four professional titles, including the UK Championship, Bombay International and Professional Snooker League.
He also progressed to the semi-finals of both the World Championship and British Open, whilst finishing as runner-up at the Champion of Champions in 1980. Following the sad news of his passing, the BBC released a statement saying: “Some sad news to bring you. Snooker legend and BBC commentator John Virgo has died aged 79. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”
The World Snooker Tour also expressed their condolences: “Everyone at World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo, aged 79. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Rest in peace, JV.”
Jason Francis, chairman of World Seniors Snooker, was the first to announce Virgo’s death via his Snooker Legends account on X. He shared: “Heartbreaking to share the news that we’ve lost the great ‘JV’ John Virgo this morning, he passed away in Spain. Rosie and Brooke-Leah would like everyone to know. Our hearts go out to them both, Gary and the grandchildren.
“JV was doing what he loved to do right up until the end, entertaining everyone. Such an important person in my life but in our sport in general.
“An amazingly loyal friend to me, and someone you felt was sat with you at the match when he was commentating on TV.
“Hard to take this one… one great person who touched so many lives and loved the game. We will never forget you bud. RIP JV.”
