The Met Office has issued widespread snow and ice warnings across 90% of the UK, with up to 15cm expected in some areas bringing travel chaos – here’s the full list of areas affected
Lots of weather warnings are in place
The Met Office has issued extensive snow and ice warnings spanning the UK – with several inches expected to blanket the nation. The national weather service is cautioning of travel disruption and potential injuries from slips and tumbles as harsh winter conditions sweep across vast swathes of the country.
Britons in the impacted areas are braced for extended travel times on roads, buses and trains, whilst “injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces” are anticipated.
The alerts arrive as flurries of snow and hail – beginning Friday afternoon and persisting through the night – could deliver accumulations reaching up to 15cm (six inches) in certain locations.
“Sleet is more likely along some coasts, leading to ice on untreated surfaces as temperatures fall below freezing overnight,” the Met Office warned.
Four fresh warnings were announced today. One snow and ice alert encompasses the far north of Scotland and the north-east of England.
A separate snow and ice warning blankets the whole of Scotland, northern England and sections of the Midlands. A new ice warning has been declared for Northern Ireland, whilst a second ice alert covers Wales and the bulk of England.
Wintry showers are set to impact the regions, beginning at approximately 9pm on Saturday and tapering off by 10am on Sunday. The Yellow alert for snow and ice was announced at 10:28am on Friday, February 13.
A Met Office forecast said: “Outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards on Saturday night will fall as snow initially, even to low levels for a time, before becoming confined to higher ground as milder air arrives from the west.
“Temporary snow accumulations of 1-3 cm will be possible at low levels, with 3-7 cm possible above about 150 m elevation, and perhaps 10-15 cm above 400 m.
“Areas sheltered to the north of high ground may see very little snow. Ice will be an additional hazard, particularly across northeast England and parts of Scotland where precipitation has the potential to fall on frozen ground leading to very slippery conditions.
“Snow will turn increasingly to rain into Sunday morning, perhaps as a short spell of freezing rain in places, before eventually clearing to the east with a steady thaw of lying snow then setting in.”
