South Korea’s ex-president faces loss of life sentence as he’s convicted of masterminding rebellion by implementing martial legislation in 2024

A court in South Korea has found its former President Yoon Suk Yeol guilty of leading an insurrection during his botched attempt to place the country under martial law in December 2024.

The Seoul Central District Court is expected to sentence Yoon and several former military police and officials on Thursday.

Judge Jee Kui-youn said he found Yoon guilty of rebellion for mobilising military and police forces in an illegal attempt to seize the liberal-led National Assembly, arrest politicians and establish unchecked power for a ‘considerable’ time.

A special prosecutor has demanded the death penalty for Yoon, saying his actions posed a threat to the country’s democracy and deserved the most serious punishment available, but most analysts expect a life sentence.
