Politician labels authorities ‘Spursy’ as he says ‘we should not carry out like Tottenham’

Swedish politician Mikael Damberg has used Tottenham Hotspur as a comparison to his nation’s economic problems in an extraordinary parliament speech referencing the term ‘Spursy’

Swedish politician Mikael Damberg has taken an extraordinary dig at Tottenham, likening their struggles to his nation’s economic difficulties. In what seems to be a formal parliamentary speech, Damberg drew a peculiar yet seemingly apt parallel between the north London club and Sweden’s current and potential economic downturn.

Addressing the chamber about Sweden’s predicaments, his comments translate into English as: “I naturally think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, it is one of England’s most distinguished and wealthy clubs with a massive stadium, devoted and large fan base – everything that qualifies them as a ‘top team’.

“Despite this, Tottenham find themselves in crisis. They are battling near the bottom of the table, just a few points clear of the relegation zone. Not because they lack resources or advantages, but because they have wasted opportunities.

“Due to making poor choices, general incompetence and short-term thinking, they have lost their direction and stability. The club have been given the name ‘Spursy’, [which is] when you have opportunities but achieve no results. Madame Speaker, that is precisely how the Minister of Finance is managing the Swedish economy.”, reports the Mirror.

“Sweden has the power, capability and resources. We have the businesses, workforce and innovation capabilities. Conditions exist for the Swedish economy to thrive.”

He added: “The government risks making Sweden ‘Spursy’. That won’t do. Sweden cannot perform like Tottenham.”

Though rather direct, Damberg’s assessment of the club isn’t far from the truth, with a series of questionable decisions leaving them in perilous territory.

Igor Tudor has been named as interim manager with the sole mission of hauling Tottenham out of this crisis and away from the relegation zone, after Thomas Frank’s woeful run of merely two wins from 17 Premier League fixtures.

The survival mission kicks off this Sunday afternoon with the enormously challenging task of facing north London rivals Arsenal, who currently top the table.

During his inaugural press conference as manager, Tudor briefly mentioned that clash whilst also discussing the problems he’s already identified and his potential solution.

He said: “The situation is not easy, because, as you know better than me, we have a lot of injured players, so we need first to find the best system, the suit for the players that are available in this moment.

“So, a very particular moment, maybe this can sound strange, but I believe that the thing that we need to be focused on is the training. So, the training from today, that’s the key, because, as I always like to say, Sunday and the game is a consequence of the training.”

Two players ruled out of contention are Sweden internationals Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski. With this in mind, the duo are anticipated to feature when Damberg’s comments are addressed.
