More particulars on Ian Huntley’s jail assault emerge as Soham little one killer fights for all times

Soham child murderer Ian Huntley was allegedly ambushed with a metal pole with a spike on it has emerged. Huntley was reportedly left lying in a pool of blood after allegedly being attacked by another prisoner with an ‘iron bar’ and is now battling for his life in hospital.
The 52-year-old was rushed to hospital following the attack this morning (February 26), which reportedly triggered scenes of ‘absolute chaos’ around 9am at HMP Frankland, County Durham.
Huntley is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of murdering two 10 year old girls, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who disappeared from a family barbecue in Soham, Cambridgeshire, in August 2002.
Durham Constabulary confirmed that a prisoner, believed to be Huntley, was assaulted on Thursday morning at HMP Frankland in County Durham before being taken to hospital.
A spokesperson for the force stated: “Police were alerted to an assault which had taken place within HMP Frankland in Durham this morning.
“A male prisoner suffered serious injuries during the incident and was transported to hospital.
“A police investigation is now under way into the circumstances of the incident and detectives are liaising with staff at the prison.”
The Sun, which initially disclosed the assault, reported he was rendered unconscious by a metal pole and cited a source claiming his condition was “touch and go”.
He is currently serving a life sentence, with a stipulation that he must complete at least 40 years, for the murders.
A Prison Service spokesperson stated: “A prisoner is receiving treatment after an incident at HMP Frankland on Thursday morning.
“It would be inappropriate to comment further whilst police investigate.”
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed: “We dispatched two ambulance crews to the scene and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
“One patient was transported to hospital by road.”
This marks not the first occasion Huntley, 52, has faced violence at Frankland prison.
Wielding a makeshift weapon, robber Damien Fowkes slashed him in 2010, inflicting a “severe gaping cut to the left side of his neck”. The injury measured 7in (18cm) in length and necessitated 21 stitches.
Fowkes enquired of a prison officer: “Is he dead? I hope so.”
He branded Huntley as a “notorious child killer, both inside prison and in society in general”.
Prior to his transfer to HMP Frankland, he was housed at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire and was doused with boiling water by North Yorkshire serial killer Mark Hobson.
