UK set for but extra rain as moist spell causes big wave of soccer cancellations

Forecasters at the Met Office says Britain will see more ‘blustery showers’ after a sodden winter sparked loads of cancellations for grassroots sports, including football

Britain is set for more soakings this week. Forecasters at the Met Office admitted we’ll see further “blustery showers” and “wet and windy” weather in the coming days.

The soggy start to 2026 has already blown the final whistle on grassroots sports including football. Some local and youth footie clubs in southern England haven’t played any games so far this year due to floods.

Phil Kirkby, chairman of Goudhurst Dynamos FC in Kent, said: “What should be the busiest and most exciting stretch of the grassroots season has instead turned into a string of cancellations.”

He added extended breaks in training and matches can be “detrimental to cardiovascular fitness and match readiness, making it harder for players to perform at their best when games eventually resume”.

And it’s a similar situation in Wales where 30% of games have been postponed. Tom Evison, a coach of the Llangollen youth team, said it’s been an “extremely frustrating season due to the persistent wet weather”.

His team face a backlog of 12 fixtures to be completed by the end of April.

Elsewhere, the Grounds Management Association advises that “without adequate traction a pitch is likely to be unsafe and the risk of player injury increases”.

Playing on a wet pitch can also damage the grass surface with divots, scrapes and scars becoming much more frequent.

Meanwhile, the Met Office said the West Midlands, Cornwall and Leicestershire have all suffered their wettest winter on record. And the forecaster said the downpours will return from Wednesday.

A spokesperson said: “Mostly dry on Tuesday, but wet and windy weather moving in overnight, to leave a mixture of sunny spells and blustery showers on Wednesday. Wet and windy again on Thursday.”
