WWE legend ‘has leg amputated’ and should lose different limb regardless of return to firm

WWE legend Konnan has reportedly undergone a leg amputation in San Diego following severe health issues, with fears he could lose his other limb after surgery

Wrestling icon Konnan has reportedly undergone life-changing surgery following a series of severe medical setbacks. The 62-year-old veteran has spent the majority of the last six weeks in a San Diego hospital dealing with significant health complications.

According to reports from RECORD, the Cuban-born star has had one of his legs amputated and remains in a fragile condition.

Tragically, there are further concerns regarding his recovery, with reports suggesting there is a risk he could lose his other limb as well.

Konnan had recently been integrated into the WWE fold following the company’s acquisition of Mexican Lucha Libre promotion AAA last year.

Transitioning from his role as a color commentator into the creative writing room, the veteran was a key figure behind the scenes before his health forced him away from television.

Wrestling insider Dave Meltzer recently addressed the veteran’s absence, noting that the situation has been ongoing for some time.

Meltzer said: “He’s been in rough shape for a while now, probably since the last time he was on AAA television, so it’s probably been six weeks. He’s been in and out of the hospital, mostly in, that much I know.”

The latest setback follows years of gruelling health challenges for the wrestling star, including a kidney transplant in 2007 following organ failure.

In 2022, he revealed he had been placed back on the transplant waiting list as he noted that kidneys from living donors typically function for approximately 12 to 15 years.

Further complications arose in February 2021 when he was hospitalised after contracting COVID-19. The virus severely impacted his kidneys and triggered heart failure.

In addition to those struggles, the veteran has faced major orthopaedic issues, including a hip replacement surgery back in 2007.

Konnan’s influence on professional wrestling is significant, particularly as a bridge between Lucha Libre and the American mainstream.

He carries a significant championship pedigree as a former tag team champion alongside Rey Mysterio in WCW. His ties to the industry remain deep as the godfather to current WWE superstar Dominik Mysterio.

His standing in the business was further cemented in 2023 when he took centre stage to officially induct Rey Mysterio into the WWE Hall of Fame.
