Cheltenham Festival punter batters bookie and turns £40 into £59,100 with unimaginable wager
A Cheltenham Festival punter has landed an incredible near £60,000 windfall after placing just £40 worth of bets as a huge favourite on Thursday delivered the goods
A Cheltenham Festival punter has bashed the bookies after transforming £40 into a staggering £60,000 payout on Thursday. The William Hill customer cashed in from two ante-post accumulator wagers which hinged on the result of the Mares’ Hurdle.
The opening bet combined Kargese, who claimed the Arkle Trophy at odds of 7-1, with Lossiemouth in the Champion Hurdle (13-2) and Il Etait Temps in the Champion Chase (8-1). The second accumulator also featured Kargese at 6-1, Lossiemouth (3-1) and King Rasko Grey at 20-1.
With the opening three selections in each wager prevailing, the final payout depended on Wodhooh who completed both bets at odds taken of 7-4 and 6-4.

The Gordon Elliott-trained Wodhooh, who was returned at a starting price of 5-6, duly delivered, securing her second Festival triumph by a length from Jade De Grugy.
Having wagered a total of £20 on each bet, the punter’s winnings were £29,700 and £29,400, netting them a total haul of £59,100.
William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “After enjoying such a good Cheltenham yesterday, we’ve been brought back down to earth with a thud by a pair of big Festival winners from the same punter.
“The shrewd bettor placed a pair of £20 ante-post four-folds which both hinged on Wodhooh in the Mares’ Hurdle.
“The Elliott mare duly obliged and landed a four-fold duo which is surely the stuff of Cheltenham ante-post punting dreams. We have to take our hats off to this punter, and accept that they’ve pulled off a right touch with these two bets.”
However, the day, as has been the Festival, is so far playing into the hands of the bookies rather than the punter with Wodhooh just won of two favourites to win on Thursday, with Supremely West winning the Pertemps Handicap Hurdles at 100/3.
The Ryanair Chase Fact To File was pulled out of day three’s feature race due to Willie Mullins’ concerns over the ground, which he also suggested were behind the evens favourite Bambino Fever flopping in the opener.
