Dominik Szoboszlai exhibits true colors with two-word message after Anfield boos

Dominik Szoboszlai has urged Liverpool to ‘wake up’ after the Reds were booed off the pitch following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Anfield as their Champions League qualification hopes continue to falter

Dominik Szoboszlai has urged Liverpool to ‘wake up’ after they were met with boos from the crowd following Sunday’s 1-1 stalemate against Tottenham.

Szoboszlai, 25, had given the Reds the lead with a stunning first-half free-kick, and Arne Slot’s team looked set to clinch a crucial victory until Richarlison grabbed a last-minute equaliser for Spurs.

Upon the final whistle, boos and jeers echoed around Anfield from disgruntled Liverpool fans, expressing their disappointment at failing to defeat a Spurs side embroiled in a Premier League relegation scrap.

When questioned about the Liverpool fans’ booing, Szoboszlai told Sky Sports: “I didn’t hear the boos but we can understand them because last season we became champions but this season we are not performing in a way we should be.

“But I think they should stand behind us because last season, when we were champions, four games before the end everybody was happy so support us when we are in a difficult time.”

A win against Tottenham would have seen Liverpool draw level on points with fourth-place Aston Villa and close the gap to just three points behind third-place Manchester United.

Although the Reds have climbed one place and a point above Chelsea by drawing with Spurs, they could have been in a much stronger position in the race for a Champions League spot.

And Szoboszlai has warned his colleagues to step up their game or risk settling for a spot in the Europa League or even the Conference League next season.

“At the end we have to wake up because there are eight or nine games left to go and if we keep going like this, next season we should be happy to play (in the) Conference League,” Szoboszlai added.

“If I knew the answer, then I would probably tell the guys and we would change it. I don’t know, honestly I don’t know.”
