Tenerife has declared an island-wide emergency as Storm Therese brings 100km/h gales, torrential rain and Saharan dust to the popular British holiday destination, with other Canary Islands also on alert

  • British tourists face holiday chaos as Tenerife declares an ‘island wide emergency’ ahead of Storm Therese battering the Canary Islands.
  • The popular hotspot, which welcomes 2.8 million Brits yearly, activated its Island Emergency Plan as meteorologists warn of 100km/h winds and torrential rain hitting today. Saharan dust could also reduce visibility across the island.
  • Tenerife president Rosa Davila said the emergency measures were made ‘in advance’ to ‘protect public safety’. Officials are urging tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from restricted areas.
  • Tenerife’s Minister of Natural Environment, Blanca Pérez, warned landslides, floods and ‘catastrophic coastal damage’ are expected. Tourists have been told to secure loose outdoor items that could be blown away.
  • Other Canary Islands including Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are also bracing for the storm’s impact. The weather front has already caused disruption across Europe and North Africa.
  • Malaga has been put on yellow alert with warnings of 50km/h winds and possible flooding. Storm Therese may continue travelling across Western Europe, with Southern France also on high alert.
