Everything you need to know as GAME has retail shake-up

  • Gaming giant GAME is pulling the plug on all its standalone stores as Britain’s brutal retail climate claims another victim.
  • The chain has confirmed its final three brick-and-mortar shops will shut their doors for good in April 2026. But gamers needn’t panic – the online store will keep running and gift cards remain valid.
  • GAME will continue trading through over 200 concessions in Sports Direct and House of Fraser stores. The retailer has been steadily downsizing for years, shuttering stores as leases expire and even closing its Basingstoke headquarters last year.
  • Managing director Nick Arran insisted gaming remains the company’s “core business” in 2023, saying: “We will be the last man standing selling physical video games.” He compared collector’s editions to “the vinyl of video games” and stressed the importance of physical gifts.
  • But he admitted the business is facing a harsh environment. He said: “We need to be realistic – we have a business to run, and the expectation is that this will decline.”
  • Customers have two years to use gift cards and eVouchers before they expire, but they’re only valid in the UK.
