Miguel Almiron breaks silence on Jack Grealish dig after winning Premier League award
Newcastle star Miguel Almiron has finally spoken out on Jack Grealish’s dig after scooping the EA Sports Player of the Month award.
Almiron joined the Magpies in 2019 from MLS side Atlanta United, but he initially found it difficult to adjust to life in the Premier League. The Paraguayan’s indifferent form led to Manchester City star Jack Grealish comparing his team-mate Riyad Mahrez’s poor performance in their side’s title-winning final game of last season to Almiron’s showing in a black and white shirt.
Grealish was caught on camera joking with Mahrez after City beat Aston Villa 3-2 in the season’s climax, saying: “Riyad, take him off the pitch, as soon as possible. He played like Almiron.” But Almiron has made City flop Grealish regret his statement this season with his impeccable form, which has helped Newcastle storm into fourth in the Prem.

The 28-year-old’s six goals in October alone, and eight in total, saw him awarded with the best player of the month prize by the Premier League. In comparison, £100m disappointment Grealish has only managed to score once all season, and it’s fair to say his biggest impact has been off the field where the England star got livestock banned from his mansion.
However, Almiron took the high road when asked about Grealish’s jibe, and claimed he brushed them off, although he did admit he was happy with Newcastle’s fans for leaping to his defence against his midfield counterpart. The Toon Army wasted no time laying into Grealish when Almiron scored for Newcastle against City at the start of the season.
And reflecting on Grealish’s dig, Almiron mused to the Chronicle Live: “All that incident did really was highlight that when that type of thing happens here it shows the greatness of the Newcastle supporters. I actually did not pay too much attention to the comments at first I will be honest because I prefer to just get on with my job and do my work in silence.

“I just get on with my work and the only thing that matters to me is to improve myself. When you achieve things in life it only comes through hard work and sacrifice anyway, especially in football, it’s never through words.
At the time when the (Grealish) stuff all came up, I was then filled with happiness and pride with the way the Newcastle supporters rallied around me. They showed their support at that point and it was really important.”
But unfortunately for Almiron, he’ll have to watch Grealish perform at the World Cup from home. Grealish was included in Gareth Southgate’s squad that will be travelling to Qatar, while Almiron’s national side won’t be participating in the competition.
