Sky Sports compelled to apologise for X-rated comment throughout Arsenal’s trophy parade

Sky Sports were forced to issue an apology after X-rated remarks were made on live TV during Arsenal’s Premier League trophy parade in London

Sky Sports were forced to issue an apology after foul-mouthed comments were made live on air during Arsenal’s title parade.

The Gunners returned to north London just hours after their crushing Champions League final defeat on penalties against PSG on Saturday night in Budapest to host their trophy parade. Mikel Arteta’s side could have been holding the club’s first Champions League trophy ever, but it wasn’t to be after Gabriel missed his crucial spot kick.

However, Arsenal fans were still in high spirits as they cheered their heroes through the streets of north London as Arteta and his players paraded the Premier League trophy for the first time in 22 years.

But the emotions got the better of one rude fan whose behaviour threatened to take the parade coverage off the air when he jumped in on Sky News’ broadcast on the ground.

While presenter Barnaby Papadopulos was talking, a supporter stepped in front of him and shouted: “22 f****** years.” The reporter immediately apologised for the X-rated language as the fan was ushered away from the camera and off air.

A day that was supposed to be filled with celebration was marred by emergency service intervention to rescue 75 people from a height, 16 arrests and one person stabbed.

Fans were told not to climb onto rooftops and other vantage points to see the parade but fire services were called to rescue nearly 100 supporters who had become stuck.

There were also 16 arrests made during the celebrations, including one on suspicion of sexual assault. Others were taken into custody on suspicion of drunk and disorderly behaviour, drug offences and assaulting emergency workers.

Videos appeared on social media showing a small group of Arsenal fans throwing punches at each other despite the day supposed to be about celebrating the club’s achievements with their fellow supporters.

According to the London Fire Brigade, a stray flare caused a hotel fire. Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “Fortunately, the fire caused only a small amount of damage to the exterior of the building. Pyrotechnics are also believed to have triggered the fire alarms at several other locations in the area.

“As supporters head home, we would urge them to avoid using pyrotechnics, particularly at stations, and to keep them away from buildings and other flammable materials.”

Mr Goulbourne also praised the celebrations as a “fantastic sight” and said so many of the fans were “celebrating their club’s achievement safely.”
