A World Cup host state has been rocked almost 24 hours before the USA play their last group stage game in California.

According to local reports, a preliminary magnitude 5.6 earthquake has been recorded to have struck Mendocino County on Wednesday morning (June 24). The state will see home nation USA take on Turkey at Los Angeles Stadium tomorrow (June 25 but will be early morning June 26 in the UK).

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake reportedly hit at 8:10am at around 7 miles north of Redwood Valley. However, some experienced shaking as far as Sacramento, which is around 140 miles away.

The National Tsunami Warning Center has thankfully stated that their is currently no tsunami warning.

Several people were given alerts about the quake, even living as far away as 100 miles. The alert gave brace instructions and informed locals to expect shaking.

California governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident, according to the X account run by his press team.

The post read: “Governor Newsom has been briefed on reports of an earthquake in Mendocino County. The Governor’s Office is closely coordinating with emergency officials and assessing potential impacts and damage.”

Users on social media have reported shaking with others saying family living in the impacted area have seen their house “trashed”.

One said: “My cousin’s house in Mendocino County is trashed. All the drawers opened up everything’s off her counters, pictures are off the walls and some smaller items of furniture have been knocked over.”
