World Cup followers ‘run over by automobile’ as driver ‘accelerates and ploughs into crowds’

At least 17 people have been run down by a car that ploughed into World Cup crowds leaving Mexico’s victory match against the Czech Republic.

Multiple people were injured on Wednesday night in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, where dozens of people had gathered to celebrate the national team’s win. Reports suggest a driver travelling on Lázaro Cárdenas Boulevard accelerated when they were met with pedestrians in the road, causing several people to be struck.

Public safety, fire department and civil protection personnel arrived following the shocking incident to provide assistance to those hurt, as well as closing off the area. According to official information, at least 17 injured people were transferred to different health centres to be treated.

The alleged driver of the car was arrested by police after the incident unfolded. The area remained closed to traffic while police investigated.
