Three World Cup followers die throughout Mexico celebrations as revellers reportedly ‘crushed’

At least three people died during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City as the country’s national team advanced to the round of 16, according to local authorities, after Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at the Azteca Stadium

At least three people have died during festivities in Mexico City as the nation’s football team progressed to the round of 16 at the World Cup, local authorities confirmed.

According to the city’s health secretary, a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died of asphyxiation on Wednesday (June 30). The tragedy unfolded at Paseo de la Reforma and Lancaster, in the Colonia Juárez neighbourhood, when revellers were reportedly crushed against a public toilet trailer. A third fatality was later confirmed with a 48-year-old woman, who also died from asphyxiation.

The Health Secretariat stated: “On the streets of Hamburg and Lancaster, a report was received of two unconscious people, so the emergency response teams made up of paramedics, firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, officials from the Government Secretariat and preventive police officers went to the point to provide assistance; after performing first aid and CPR techniques on the patients, they were transferred to a hospital for specialized medical care.”

In a later post, the Health Secretariat provided an update confirming the ages of those who had sadly died.

The post said: “After receiving advanced resuscitation manoeuvres, the death by asphyxiation is confirmed of a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, already identified by their family members.

“From the Government of Mexico City, we send our condolences to family members, friends, and loved ones, to whom all the support they require will be provided during these difficult times.”

Clara Brugada, the head of government in Mexico City, wrote on her X account: “As reported by @SSaludCdMx, the emergency teams of Mexico City immediately attended to the report of three unconscious individuals at different points near Paseo de la Reforma. All medical response protocols were activated; however, sadly, they lost their lives.

“We are in contact with their families to provide them with all the necessary support and accompaniment.With my heart in my hand, I send a hug and my most sincere condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate the call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy.”

Mexico produced a stunning and polished display at the iconic Azteca Stadium on Tuesday, thrashing Ecuador 2-0 and ending a 40-year drought for a World Cup knockout-stage triumph.

Their previous victory at this level came in 1986, when they hosted the tournament. The moment the final whistle sounded, jubilant scenes erupted across the nation, reports the Express.

With this triumph, Mexico have now extended their unbeaten run at the Azteca to 10 consecutive World Cup fixtures and will be feeling confident ahead of the round of 16, where they could potentially meet either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mexico will found out who their next opponents are later today when England play DR Congo at 5pm UK time.
