Jack Nicholson’s ‘Here’s Johnny’ scene from The Shining voted most iconic crime second

Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror from 1980 is famous for Jack Nicholson’s terrifying portrayal and other things that make the list include shower scene from Psycho

The ‘Here’s Johnny!’ bathroom scene in The Shining is the most iconic on-screen crime moment ever, according to a new poll.

Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror from 1980 is famous for Jack Nicholson’s terrifying portrayal of Jack Torrance, a winter caretaker at a mountain resort hotel.

And 22% of those surveyed said it was their most memorable crime TV or film moment. Second in the list and loved by 21% is the shower scene from 1960 flick Psycho showing Janet Leigh being murdered by a shadowy figure.

And third was the basement scene from Silence of the Lambs (12%), followed up by the Hannibal dinner table scenes from Hannibal (11%) and the phone scene from Scream (10%).

The University of Lincoln was inspired to ask people for their top screen crime scenes as part of a drive to attract the next generation of forensic investigators.

The uni has built a real-life crime scene house featuring some of television and film’s most infamous crime scenes – designed to give students the opportunity to step into the real world of forensic investigation and criminal justice.

It features 18 iconic crime scenes from popular TV shows and movies including the blood-splattered shower from Psycho, the axe-splintered bathroom door from The Shining, and other-worldly flickering lights from Stranger Things.

The attraction launches at a time when the criminal justice system faces growing shortages of skilled forensic professionals. Lack of staff in digital forensics and fewer police detectives are said to be hampering investigations.

The Crime Scene House took a team of film and set designers 250 hours to construct and will be unveiled at the University’s Open Day on July 4.

A nationwide poll, commissioned by the University of Lincoln to launch the Crime Scene House, has revealed the most memorable crime scenes from TV and film.

Also appearing in the top ten are the horse head scene from The Godfather (10 per cent), the meth lab from Breaking Bad (9 per cent), the escape scene from The Shawshank Redemption (8 per cent) the flickering lights from Stranger Things (7 per cent) and the kill room from Dexter (7 per cent).

Dr Kirsty Miller, Pro Vice Chancellor, said: “We are living in an age where social media and true crime have made criminal investigations fascinating to huge audiences, but real investigations depend on evidence, scientific rigour and professional judgement.

“Our Crime Scene House is designed to spark curiosity and show prospective students how those skills are developed in practice.”
