BBC presenter makes ‘intercourse’ blunder reside on air throughout Wimbledon protection

One BBC presenter suffered an embarrassing moment while reporting on the action at SW19

A BBC news presenter had a comical slip-up live on air while covering the day’s Wimbledon events. Roger Johnson, who has been with the BBC since the 1990s, was hosting North West Tonight when the amusing blunder took place.

Johnson was discussing Neal Skupski, from Liverpool, and his doubles partner Christian Harrison’s defeat to Aleksandar Kovacevic and Thanasi Kokkinakis in the round-of-16 at this year’s Championships. However, instead of referring to the losses as occurring in “straight sets”, Johnson mistakenly called it “straight sex”.

He swiftly corrected himself, stating: “Bit of a slip of the tongue. Straight sets, by Aleksandar Kovacevic and Thanasi Kokkinakis, I was so worried about the names of those tennis players, I made a right mess of that.”

As expected, social media users saw the funny side, with @scottygb posting on X: “Pride is over.” @uncreativetom chimed in: “Beaten in WHAT?”

@AntBejarano responded: “Now what are Skupski and Harrison doing here..” And Johnson, from his personal X account, replied with two face-palm emojis.

Some praised Johnson for his swift recovery, with @spinoutdaz commenting: “Love how he just owned it.” And @Parisamsyerman said: “Well recovered Roger [smiley face].”

It’s a disappointing result for Skupski, who previously clinched the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon in 2023. Earlier this year, he reclaimed the world No.1 spot in the doubles rankings and had been eyeing another triumph at the All England Club.

However, British hopes are still alive in the men’s doubles event, with the pair of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool advancing to the quarter-finals. Additionally, Henry Patten has secured his place in the last eight alongside Harri Heliovaara.

In the singles draw, all attention is on Arthur Fery, who caused a sensation by defeating Grigor Dimitrov in the last-16 on Centre Court. Responding to the victory, the 23-year-old said: “I’ve no words right now. It’s incredibly tough to put words to what I just felt on a tennis court.

“First time on this court, five sets against an absolute legend of the game. I grew up five minutes from here, coming to watch matches on this court. It’s unbelievable.”

He then added: “A week ago, I would have been happy to win a few matches here. Now being in the quarters is a dream. Just trying to keep fighting and have a good attitude with my back against the wall. It paid off today.”
