Michael Carrick faces a busy transfer window

Manchester United have enjoyed a productive couple of days in the transfer market for Michael Carrick and they’re not stopping spending just yet but one target may have eluded them.

The Red Devils have been busy wrapping up deals as most of the footballing world watches the World Cup – but their transfer window took a hit on Wednesday as Marcus Rashford’s dreams of a Barcelona return suffered another blow.

Meanwhile,Youri Tielemans has already made his first major decision as a Manchester United player. And Daily Star Sport has rounded up all the biggest stories from Old Trafford across the past 24 hours – including a midfielder who has long been linked to Old Trafford and has now agreed a deal…

Marcus Rashford exit blow

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s hopes of engineering a return to Barcelona have taken another hit, with Spanish reports indicating that Ferran Torres’ future remains up in the air until September.

Rashford enjoyed a spell on loan with the Catalan club last season, though they chose not to trigger the £26m buy-out clause included in that arrangement. What’s more, Barcelona have already wrapped up the £70m capture of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and are poised to snap up Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund.

Given that both acquisitions play in Rashford’s preferred role, any hopes of Barcelona rekindling their interest will probably remain wishful thinking. Torres’ departure might open the door for such a move, but Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo suggests he may pen fresh terms in September.

This postponement is down to FFP worries, but either way, it implies that Torres either renews his contract leaving Rashford in the lurch, or he departs post-September, by which point the Englishman’s fate will probably have been sealed.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes has long been on United’s radar.

Bitter rivals Liverpool have also weighed up a move for the Brazilian ace, after his club were relegated to the Championship following a dismal Premier League campaign where he was one of few rays of hope.

But now the 25-year-old former Flamengo man is on the brink of a move cross the Midlands to Aston Villa, having agreed to sign for Unai Emery’s Europa League winners.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano posted on X: “João Gomes to Aston Villa, here we go! Verbal agreement in place at €40m fee plus €5m add-ons.

“Wolves accept £38m package and authorise medical for João Gomes to #AVFC. Gomes left training to travel and complete move, as @johntownley11 reported.”

United’s newest recruit is certain to strengthen Carrick’s midfield with his Premier League pedigree and deep-lying playmaking talents.

However, Tielemans has considerable expectations to meet after choosing the No.18 shirt, immortalised by Paul Scholes, reports the Mirror.

Ashley Young also donned the 18, as did Bruno Fernandes during his initial seasons with the club. Casemiro was the most recent player to sport it.

Following the announcement of Tielemans’ arrival, he declared: “It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible, it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.
