Donald Trump was urged to help end one war and intensify another as he met with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky and Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump met the two leaders one after the other at the White House as they both arrived in Washington DC to attend the funeral of Senator Lindsey Graham.

Graham had, separately, been an ally to both Zelensy and Netanyahu – acting as a go-between and helping to help Ukraine and Israel to better understand the thinking of Trump’s White House.

Both meetings were closed to the press.

In a post on social media after the meeting, Zelenskyy thanked Trump for the “good meeting” and the Republican administration’s efforts to aid Kyiv in the long-running war, which began more than four years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said both the Zelensky meeting and a separate, later sit-down with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were “positive and productive.”

Trump welcomed Zelenskyy to the White House as the Ukrainian leader traveled to Washington to honor Graham, whose final act as a public official was visiting Kyiv and securing an agreement on a package of sanctions that seek to punish countries that purchase Russian oil, gas and other exports.

In a TV interview on Tuesday, Trump said senator Graham’s support for Ukraine never wavered. He said it was Graham who suggested it was time to make a deal with Iran but had no similar suggestion for the Russia-Ukraine war.

“Ukraine, he’s very militant about,” Trump told Fox News. “I mean, Lindsey liked war, to be honest with you.”

Ahead of the meeting, Zelensky also warned that Russia has been aiding Iran as the war persists by capturing satellite imagery of US bases in the Gulf region that later appeared in Iran. The Ukrainian president also asserted that there was a “clear correlation” between Russia’s images and subsequent Iranian strikes.

“The purpose is clear,” Zelensky said earlier this month. “None of us in the world should turn a blind eye to one very simple fact: Evil always seeks ways to make things worse and spread further.”
