Girl ‘sexually assaulted’ in bus shelter at UK station as man in 70s arrested

Police are appealing to the public for help after a teenage girl reported that she was sexually assaulted at a UK railway station.
British Transport Police has issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward following the incident which allegedly happened at Leighton Buzzard railway station on Saturday, July 4. Detectives said at around 10.20am the girl was sat in the bus shelter outside the railway station when a man entered. He then allegedly proceeded to sexually harass and assault her, causing her to leave the bus shelter to escape him.
Police have arrested a man in his 70s on suspicion of sex-based harassment causing alarm and distress, sexual assault, and sexual communication with a child, and has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

Detectives are urgently appealing to two people who were walking through the car park and may have witnessed the incident to contact police.

It comes after police arrested five men on suspicion of rape after reports that a woman was attacked at a property in Ipswich.
Suffolk Police confirmed five men, aged 27, 31, 35, 44 and 49, had been arrested on suspicion of rape and remain in police custody for questioning. An investigation has now been launched into the “serious sexual assault” which is alleged to have happened in the early hours of Sunday.
Police added the woman is being supported by specialist trained officers and that there will be an “increased police presence” in the area as the investigation continues. Suffolk Police urged any witnesses or people with information to get in touch.
Detective Chief Inspector Craig Brett said: “I understand the concern this may cause the local community and would like to assure the public that our teams have been working tirelessly since the incident was reported to us.
“A scene remains in place and there is currently an increased police presence in the area as we conduct our enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
“We encourage the public to speak with officers if you have any concerns or information.”
