Greggs has officially rebranded one of its most popular bakes after a tongue-tied interview blunder by Andy Burnham sent pastry sales soaring. The high-street bakery giant jumped on the news after the Prime Minister was put on the spot and asked to name his go-to Greggs treat.

Instead of using its official title, the PM panicked and blurted out: “That sausage, bean and cheese thing.” His less-than-glamourous description immediately set off a scramble, with sales of the iconic sausage, bean and cheese melt doubling overnight.

Hungry Mancs and eager staff from No.10 North rushed to get a taste of the nation’s new political power-snack.

Never one to miss a trick, Greggs has now officially adopted Burnham’s makeshift title, renaming the pastry the “sausage, bean and cheese thing” in his honour.

Early-morning commuters rubbed their eyes in disbelief today as workers at the Heron House shop in central Manchester, plonked right outside the new No.10 North base, were spotted swapping out the official store signs.

Digital screens inside the shop were also hastily updated to display a proud new label: “The sausage, cheese and bean thing as eaten by our Prime Minister.”

Warren McCarrick, shop manager at the Greggs branch said: “Our shop has been buzzing with Mancs getting their hands on Burnham’s favourite bake. Sales have gone through the roof this morning. Cheers, Andy.

“We thought we’d repay the favour and rename it to what the Prime Minister seems to fondly know it as. We’ve also dropped off a few outside No.10 North, in case he’s too shy to be seen in the queue.”

Greggs bosses are now bracing for a massive Burnham bake bounce, expecting demand for the legendary melt to stay sky-high for the rest of the week as inquisitive Brits scramble to eat like the PM.

The hilarious pastry mix-up comes shortly after Burnham confessed that he actually gets some of his best government policy ideas while waiting for his morning fix.

The Prime Minister admitted that suggestions whispered to him while waiting in the Greggs queue, or shared over a pint in the pub, have repeatedly inspired his biggest decisions as a politician.

Whether Burnham’s pastry-powered policies actually pay off remains to be seen, but the nation’s high streets do appear sold on the “thing”.
